Day 103: I Love the WORK I Do

Today was a typical day at work.  I started at my work day at 6 and then spent the next 13 hours on the clock.  I am a chauffeur, a housekeeper, a cook, counselor, an event coordinator, and a developmental education specialist, among other things.  I work nearly hourly with human waste and routinely have to scrub jelly, crayon, and mucus off of various surfaces.  I have to have boundless energy and the reflexes of a cat.  I have to be able to stay calm and level-headed in all emergencies.  And God, there are emergencies.  I routinely have to check for blood, concussions, broken bones, and swallowed bugs.  I sometimes get an hour reprieve from my main responsibility, only to fill that time with my secondary responsibilities.  I've been peed on, pooped on, and thrown up on.  I never get to go to the bathroom or shower by myself.  I don't get sick days.  Also, once I go off the clock, there is no guarantee that I won't be called back to work multiple times before my shift is ready to begin.  Also, I only get paid in hugs, smiles, and giggles.  And you know what?  That's enough.

I'm a mom.

There has been a lot of uproar today when a political analyst, with a poor choice of words to convey her mindset, insinuated that stay-at-home-moms don't "work."  I obviously beg to differ.  I understand that she apologized and tried to clarify her sentiment, but I am still disappointed that such words could come out of her mouth.  Moms work.  I don't care if you are at stay-at-home-mom or a working mom, you work.  And there shouldn't be animosity or judgement between these groups.  Why can't we all celebrate each other and whatever situation works best for us and for our family? (And let me add a special shout out to stay-at-home-dads too!)

There, I said my piece.  Now let me show you a few pictures from my day on the job.  :)

Park time!

Today we went to BBC, hung out at the park, ate a giant quesadilla, went to Miss R's while Mommy worked on school stuff and Little Buddy played, and then delivered a meal to Miss A and her new baby.  A long day on the job, but worth every second.  And everyday I am so thankful that I am able to have this job.

Rest well,

LBM
